Fue Hair Transplantation

The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), together with the Strip technique (FUT) and the micro-strip (M-S), the three methods of follicular unit hair transplantation and their unique technical difference lies in the different ways of receiving of the hair follicles.

More specifically: Through the FUE, each hair follicle is individually received from different, scattered points of the donor area as opposed to the Strip (FUT) and the micro-strip technique (M-S), in which hair follicles are obtained by dividing the continuous whole hair follicle tissue.

Next, the procedure for placing the hair follicles during hair transplantation is absolutely common for all three techniques.

The FUE hair transplantation technique is therefore performed through an individual hair follicle extraction from the Fixed Hair Growth Zone, as the hair of the donor area is greatly reduced to 3 to 4 millimeters (back and side of the head) and transplanted to the receiving area of the thinning.

The FUE, however, as a method of hair transplantation, presents a number of problems that, through the experience of years of application, significant conclusions have begun to be drawn.

The most important problem with the FUE is the large loss of grafts during their receiving, because it is about a blind method.

It has been estimated that in a hair transplantation, up to 30 to 35% of the grafts can be lost, even by a doctor with great experience.

This is because the hair does not all grow vertically, so, when we are trying to remove the follicle and following the direction of the hair, it is “decapitated” and the graft is destroyed.

Hence, in cases where we have a large coverage with hair follicles, the FUE is contraindicated, while in cases of eyebrow, temple or beard transplantation, we can use it.

Which factors determine the success rates of the method?

  • The age of each patient
  • The specific characteristics of their face
  • The severity of the problem and the grade of alopecia
  • The availability of hair follicles

What results should the patient expect?

The FUE results are very good to excellent and absolutely natural, depending on the individual and, of course, on the experience of the doctor who performed the method.

They are also recognized after just a few days!

Besides the scalp, is the method applied to other parts?

The FUE is applied, with absolute success, in the restoration of eyebrows through the transfer of individual hair follicles, in the restoration of sparse hair on the face and in the repairing of scars.
