Hair Loss Treatments for Men

Minoxidil 5%

It is about the active substance in a lotion, which you locally massage on the head, twice a day (unless the doctor gives you other instructions).

Advantages:

  • Fights the weakening of the hair follicle
  • Reduces hair loss
  • Helps maintain the already existing hair growth

In some cases, the development of new hair has been observed, which is though thinner and lighter-coloured than the normal ones. Of course, you will see any results after 6 months. Unfortunately, the lotion should be used continuously and if you stop applying it, the positive results are reversed. As for its side effects, they are limited and usually include symptoms such as itching or head rash.

Dutasteride

It belongs to the category of DHT inhibitors, just like finasteride, but it inhibits both types of the 5α-reductase enzyme, while finasteride inhibits only one such type. Dutasteride can also be used as an solution for injection through the mesotherapy method (dermojet), with excellent results.

Finasteride

It is a substance with proven effects in the treatment of hair loss (Propecia, Proscar). Its only indication is male androgenetic alopecia. It works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

The effects of this hair loss treatment are impressive, as it significantly slows down hair loss and restores weak hair, to a certain extent.

Adverse reactions are observed and regard the following:

  • reducing of the libido
  • gynecomastia
  • the weak semen
  • a potential prostate cancer because it reduces the levels of PSA (prostate specific antigen). Therefore, it should not be given to ages over 45 years

This hair loss treatment has effects during the drug administration, as the problem gradually recovers, after it has stopped. Recently, the FDA announced that some of the side effects are irreversible.

Laser therapy

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), regarding hair restoration, uses cooling laser to stimulate hair growth and reduce thinning. The LLLT is based on the scientific principle of photo-biotherapy. Photo-biotherapy occurs when the laser lighting strength (radiation) is absorbed by the cells and stimulates the cell metabolism and the protein synthesis. Although the exact mechanism through which laser radiation promotes hair growth is still unknown, it appears to enhance the scalp follicles by increasing energy production and reversing the reduction (a process leading to thicker hair shafts and a more complete appearance).

The laser radiation is the visible red light of the spectrum and it is produced in a laser diode. The energy level is much lower than that applied by the laser beams used in the cross-section or sublimation of tissue. The low level of red laser light has a very low absorption rate from human tissue, a fact which makes it safe for use in the treatment of hair loss. The laser emits 670nm of visible red light. While cooling laser therapies have been approved for use, their long-term efficacy has not yet been determined.

A 12-month programme may require treatment sessions 3 times a week and more, converging to one treatment per month. The results of the use of lasers in hair loss have not been documented.

Mesotherapy

In cases of hair loss and alopecia, we use this specific method to introduce into the skin of the scalp, that is to say, in the hair follicles, the appropriate pharmaceutical and multivitamin preparations for the strengthening and regeneration of the hair.

Laboratory testing, a clinical examination, and a digital trichogram are performed to diagnose the type of alopecia (androgenetic, diffuse, cicatricial, areata, etc.), in order to determine the pharmaceutical “cocktail” to be used. Indicatively, we should mention that multivitamins, minerals, trace elements, antioxidants in combination with medicinal substances, such as minoxidil, steroids etc.
Treatments are performed once a month for six to eight months, depending on the type of alopecia. From the very first treatment, we observe a reduction in hair loss, then, stabilization and strengthening, and, later, a regrowth. The treatment is painless due to the use of a very fine needle (32G) like a hair from our eyelashes, and, without any side effects, the patient returns to their activities, immediately after the treatment.
