Hair Loss Treatments for Women

Minoxidil 2% – What happens after its intake?

Only the 2% concentration of minoxidil has been approved for use in women. Women appear to be generally more sensitive to the side effects of minoxidil, in terms of lowering blood pressure (hypotension) and lightheadedness from the intake of the medication. Women also have an increased risk of allergic skin reactions (contact dermatitis). An annoying topical reaction which may sometimes develop in women treated with minoxidil is the development of hair growth in the face. Although this unwanted hair slowly breaks when the drug is stopped, it is occasionally necessary to remove it from the face.

The careful application of the drug to avoid dripping on the cheekbones and forehead seems to reduce, but does not completely prevent, the appearance of this phenomenon. There is a significantly higher incidence of these side effects when the 5% solution is used.

Spironolactone (recommended for women only)

It belongs to the category of potassium-sparing diuretics. It also has anti-androgenic action in two ways, reducing the production of androgens by adrenal glands and the ovaries, as well as partially blocking the binding of DHT to the androgen receptors.

Simetidine (recommended for women only)

It is an inhibitor of the histamine receptors and is mainly used for the treatment of ulcers of the digestive system. At the same time, in high doses, it has a strong anti-androgenic action, preventing the DHT from binding to the follicular hair receptors.

Ceproetone acetate and ethinyl estradiol (recommended for women only)

These are contraceptives under the trade names Diane35 and Diane50 given for the female androgenic alopecia. They partially block the action of androgens, resulting in the inhibition of further hair loss and the re-growth of new hair.

Laser therapy

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), regarding hair restoration, uses cooling laser to:

  • stimulate hair growth
  • reduce their thinning.

The LLLT is based on the scientific principle of photo-biotherapy. Photo-biotherapy occurs when the laser lighting strength (radiation) is absorbed by the cells and stimulates the cell metabolism and the protein synthesis.

Although the exact mechanism through which laser radiation promotes hair growth is still unknown, it appears to enhance the scalp follicles by increasing energy production and reversing the reduction (a process leading to thicker hair shafts and a more complete appearance).

The laser radiation is the visible red light of the spectrum and it is produced in a laser diode. The energy level is much lower than that applied by the laser beams used in the cross-section or sublimation of tissue. The low level of red laser light has a very low absorption rate from human tissue, a fact which makes it safe for use in the treatment of hair loss.

The laser emits 670nm of visible red light. While cooling laser therapies have been approved for use, their long-term efficacy has not yet been determined.

A 12-month programme may require treatment sessions 3 times a week and more, converging to one treatment per month. The results of the use of lasers in hair loss have not been documented.

Mesotherapy

In cases of hair loss and alopecia, we use this specific method to introduce into the skin of the scalp, that is to say, in the hair follicles, the appropriate pharmaceutical and multivitamin preparations for the strengthening and regeneration of the hair.

Laboratory testing, a clinical examination, and a digital trichogram are performed to diagnose the type of alopecia (androgenetic, diffuse, cicatricial, areata, etc.), in order to determine the pharmaceutical “cocktail” to be used. Indicatively, we should mention that multivitamins, minerals, trace elements, antioxidants in combination with medicinal substances, such as minoxidil, steroids etc.

Treatments are performed once a month for six to eight months, depending on the type of alopecia. From the very first treatment, we observe a reduction in hair loss, then, stabilization and strengthening, and, later, a re-growth. The treatment is painless due to the use of a very fine needle (32G) like a hair from our eyelashes, and without any side effects.

The patient returns to their activities, immediately after the treatment.
